Rattlesnake

A survivor!

Rattlesnake bite!  This happened to one of our patients just playing in the backyard.  If you have an active pet that likes to roam around and is very mischievous in its surroundings, you may want to consider the rattlesnake vaccine.  “Rayli” survived, but it was a painful healing process.

Bailey

Birthday celebrations to our July patriots… one being Bailey!

Bailey’s favorite food are CARROTS.  She eats them as treats throughout the day. It’s hilarious to watch her crunch and chew through a big one.   She eats so many that we have to buy the HUGE bags of carrots at Costco.

Bailey loves walks, car rides, boat rides, and sleeping in the sunshine.  Although 12 is pretty old for a big-breed dog, she’s still going strong.

Sam I am!

Sam I am!

Sam is very feminine because he lived in a house with all girls in the city and no yard.  It wasn’t until he moved to San Antonio that he climbed his first tree and got stuck in it immediately… such a city boy!

Sam is a good traveler and has been taken on many flights (about 30 at least!)  He has lived in New York, Rhode Island, San Antonio, and now full circle back to Austin.  Tuna is his absolute favorite food, he loves sleeping on white bedding or inside open suitcases… maybe because he likes to travel!

Happy 15th Birthday, Sam the man-cat!

Emeril

Handsome Emeril!

Every time I mention “Emeril’s” name, I forget to add his face to my story… so here is my little “Emeril”.  His latest fad is the paddling pool! He loves to loll in water. Sometimes when he sees a “pond” while taking his morning walk, he will run as fast as he can towards the water and skim across the “pond” and then he’ll turn back and look at you with a happy face… says “thank you, thank you, thank you…”  and wiggles in the water with delight!”  Emeril is considered my “wild child!” One time he found a banana leaf and he had it between his teeth trying to fit it through the door – once he succeeded – I had to chase him around the house with this 5 foot leaf in his mouth and him running and looking back, seeming to say “Hey, this is my toy; find your own!”  He is a character as I am sure most owners think the same of their own pet!

The heat is on!

So, what's on your mind? Swimming or eating?

The Heat is On!

Here are some tips to keep your pet safe during these hot summer days

  • Have plenty of fresh water available
  • Make sure there is plenty of shade for your pet when outside
  • Do not leave your pets in the car during a trip to the store – windows down or up – it still gets very hot in the car
  • For dogs, do shorter walks midday and longer walks early mornings and late evenings (when it’s much cooler)
  • Hot sidewalks/pavements can burn the pads on a dog’s paws, so walk on grass
  • Have a small paddling pool for your pets to loll in after a long hot day
  • Watch out for those BBQ parties – pets should avoid raisins, grapes, onions, and chocolate
  • Not all dogs are good swimmers. Make sure they wear flotation devices when on boats
  • Animals with flat faces, like Pugs and Persian cats, are more susceptible to heat stroke since they cannot pant as effectively

Pretty..... but scary to pets!

Fireworks

We all love to bring in Independence Day with a bang!

Unfortunately, for some of our dog and cat friends fireworks are scary stuff. The easy way to help a skittish pet is to move them into the quietest room in the house before the fireworks start. Let them get comfortable, turn on some easy listening music at mid-level, then close the door for them to be alone.

If you have a couple of weeks before a celebration, there are new plug-in products to comfort and reassure dogs and cats. When you plug this product into the wall it releases an aroma that mimics a natural pheromone. Pheromones are an odorless chemical substance used by animals to communicate between their species. The mother releases this particular pheromone during her first 3-5 days of lactation. It gives the puppy or kitten a sense of well-being and reassurance. This same pheromone around adult pets has a calming effect on the majority of the animals that would normally be stressed by fireworks, thunder, changes in the house, boarding, or being separated from their owner.

Daisy

Daisy, flying high on her birthday! (Note the ears!)

Meet Daisy.  She is 15 years old and is still as spunky as ever!  We got Daisy 13 years ago as a trade off.  My daughter, Kim, had 2 ferrets and we met up with a family that wanted ferrets but already had a pet named Daisy – Daisy or ferrets?  I was so glad that they  opted for the ferrets and we got cute little Daisy, alias “handlebar ears,” alias “the “Flying Nun!”  Daisy loves her walks and loves to lay in her bed while I’m on the computer.  Her favorite spot is when we watch TV and she snuggles next to me and puts her cold nose on my arm – just to let me know that she’s there.  Her favorite food is Rabbit/Potato with frozen peas! She loves her veggies and knows she gets a treat when she finishes her meal.  I call her our “runaway!”  She likes to sneak out the front door and visit the neighbors.  Usually, Emeril (the youngest) barks and lets us know that Daisy has gone missing. But he manages to sniff her out of the neighbors yard and bring her back home! Daisy may be small but she has a “bark” in her that even frightens Emeril not to mess with her!  Happy Birthday, Daisy!
