20% of our dogs and about 10% of our cats have ear problems. If these ear problems are not corrected and go on long enough, most of these pets end up with a ruptured eardrum or worse.
What causes so many ear problems?
The vast majority is related to either skin inflammation or allergies. Either of these problems lead bacteria or yeast that are natural inhabitant of the ear canal to multiply to a large enough number to where the ear becomes a mess.
How to avoid these problems?
One simple way is to feed the highest quality of dog or cat food possible, which also helps to keep the pet's skin healthy. If dry skin develops, try adding a small amount of vegetable oil to the food daily. Also, have your vet do a good ear exam when you take your pet in for vaccinations. Your veterinarian may recommend a product to keep the ear canal dry after a bath or swimming. Check with your vet before using any ear product, some of these products could damage the middle ear.
