Seasonal Foods
It’s a holiday! Let’s look at some holiday hazards of which you might not be aware. With all the special food we have around the house, can you guess what holiday food vets get the most calls about?
Well, everyone knows chocolate is bad for your pet. This is mostly a dog problem. Dogs overdose because they eat such a tremendous amount of brownies or chocolate chip cookies. The problem is the amount that dogs ingest and not so much by the fact that "chocolate is poisonous to dogs."
Now, baking chocolate is a different story - this chocolate is 10 times more potent than milk chocolate. According to the books - 4 oz. of baking chocolate eaten by a 10-pound dog could cause fatal heart problems.
Rising bread dough can be very dangerous to dogs from ethanol intoxication from fermentation. Foreign body objects like chocolate and rising bread dough is not a problem in small amounts. Also, homemade play-dough contains lots of salt and could lead to salt toxicity.
We are constantly cleaning out the refrigerator to put in new foods between Thanksgiving and Christmas. Some of this food, after spending a few hours in the trash, becomes spoiled. Depending on the food, certain ones eaten by a pet could cause seizures, collapsing, food poisoning, diarrhea, shock, and unfortunately death. Spoiled dairy, pasta, and poultry products are the most common source of these different poisonings.
Oh yeah - the answer to my question is of course, CHOCOLATE.
