Pet Tips

New Pet Obedience

You just got that new Christmas kitten or puppy! Here are some basic tips for house training:

Kittens are easy.

   - Keep them in a small room like a bedroom or bathroom with their litter and food.
   - Offer free access to food and litter.
   - When out of this room, keep kitten in eyesight at all times for the first two weeks.

Puppies are a little more involved.

   - First, get a crate or set up their bed in a puppy proof room. This could be a bathroom,
unfurnished room, or exercise pin and cover the floor with paper.
   - Next, this is important, follow a regular schedule for feedings and walks.
   - As for house training, I see the quickest results with "prevention and reward". Prevention is
as simple as keeping the puppy in eyesight at all times when they are out of the puppy area. No
pup should be considered "house trained" until they have no accidents for 4 consecutive weeks.
As for the rewards, give a small bit of food or treat when they do their business outside. Praise
can be used later in place of food.

The secret to house training - by preventing even 1 or 2 accidents, that young pet understands what you want the quickest!
