Pet Tips

Thanksgiving

The holiday season can be a dangerous time for pets. Here are some heads up tips to avoid problems pets can get into:

Not surprisingly, most problems center around food and drinks.

First, beware of bread or cookie dough because pets love the taste. The problem is that dough swells in the stomach and is unable to pass. Yeast produces ethoral, which makes pets sick.

Pets can also be at risk to poisoning. With all the food eaten between Thanksgiving and Christmas, there are a lot of left over food. Be sure to dispose of the food being thrown away in a timely manner. Dogs and cats have a "garbage gut," and will search out food in the trash.

Needless to say, don't let your pet indulge in turkey or chicken bones and thrown away skins. Bones puncture the esophagus or stomach; and uncooked birds carry salmonella and other bacteria.

Don't let pets join your party. Do not leave liquor drinks out after the party, especially Bailey's or Kahlua. Dogs love these drinks. Sounds funny, but a one-ounce serving for a twenty-pound dog could be toxic.

These are just a few safety thoughts to keep in mind.
