Pet Tips
Christmas Pets
So you're thinking about giving the family or a special friend a puppy or kitten for Christmas. Give us a minute to share some thoughts and ideas. Is it a good idea to surprise the family on Christmas day with a new pet?
Maybe not:
- It can be stressful to the pet
- Doesn't allow the family to be part of the picking process
(i.e. breed, size, even color and markings)
- Doesn't allow the family a chance to discuss the responsibilities
of pet ownership (feeding, house training, walking, etc.)
What could we put under the tree to let the family know we will be getting a new pet?
- Pet supplies (toys, bone, scratching post, etc.)
- Gift certificate
- Stuffed animal
Places to find that new pet?
- Friends
- Internet
- Newspapers
- Animal shelters
- Rescue groups
Pets are lots of fun and provide endless love, but they are also a big responsibility. Too many people forget the responsibility part.
- 20,000 pets are sent to shelters each year
- 10,000 pets are placed in homes, but many of those left in shelters are euthanized
