Nail Trimming

What is the best way to trim my pet's nails?

First and most importantly – you have to let your pet get comfortable with you touching his feet. This could take 1-2 weeks. Start by clipping just a few nails – clip the nail just below where the nail starts to curve. Make sure you stay below that pink quick with clear nails. For dark nails, it’s probably best to have the groomer or your vet give you some pointers. My tip to make nail trimming easier on pet and owner – always give a treat to the pet before and after a nail trim. Constant praising of the pet seems to help the person doing the trimming as well as the pet from getting nervous. Last, if you do accidently clip a nail too short you can simply apply styptic powder.

Let's make nail trimming fun for the pet. Give a treat of their regular food or a piece of fat free turkey before and after trimming.

For routine nail trims, I use the guillotine type clippers.

As for trimming - the pet's nail has a sensitive pink quick in the nail. With clear nails, it's easy to see and avoid. Dark nails are tricky - trim below the area where the nail gets thick.

Clipping the tips of the nails every 2 to 3 days will gradually have the quick recede into the nail. Once the nails are a length you like, monthly trims should be adequate.
