What are some easy ways to give oral medication to your pet?
The easiest way to medicate a dog or cat is to place the medicine in their food or in a treat like peanut butter and let them eat it.
If this is not an option, liquid drugs are usually simpler. I give the owner a syringe without a needle, have them draw up the correct amount, gently tilt the head back, place the syringe in the corner of the mouth, and slowly give the medication so the pet has time to swallow.
As for tablets - most dogs are easy. Place your hand in a circle around the mouth of your pet, pressing both sides at the gum line. Most pets will open their mouths. Now tilt their head back and place the tablet over the hill of the tongue in the back of the mouth. The same technique works for cats but an occasional cat requires a "pill syringe" to avoid chewed-on fingers.
