Integrating The New Cat

I have had a couple of cat owners ask me the best way to introduce a new cat into a home with resident cats. My advice is to have the new cat checked out by the vet before doing anything. The next step, know that cats are territorial creatures – this means our new cat should have its own space. This space is not forever, just long enough for our new friend to feel welcome and the regulars to know it is time to share. Place the new feline friend, their water and litter in a room that is closed off from the other cats by a door. After a couple of weeks of hissing and pawing under the door, it’s time to let the meeting, mixing and mingling begin but under your supervision. After another couple of weeks with no fur flying, you can leave them alone to work out the details.
