Distemper
There is an ongoing debate between certain veterinary schools and vaccine producers as to whether cats need to be vaccinated every year.
Here is the latest information:
Cats that go outdoors or live in a home with a cat that goes outside, it's recommended that these cats receive a yearly feline leukemia vaccination.
Now for the confusing part:
For the past 30 to 40 years everyone agreed cats should receive a yearly combination distemper booster. There were no problems until recently, when certain veterinary schools voiced a concern that we could be over vaccinating our cats. This debate has gone back and forth until last summer. The American Veterinary Medical Association addressed the issue and released a statement saying "there is inadequate data to recommend a change from what has been going on for the last 30 plus years." They did say that each veterinarian needs to assess the protection needed for their specific area.
As for our clinic, we continue to give the yearly distemper booster.
