Cat Urinary Blockage
If you own a male cat, this bit of information about cat urinary blockage is something you want to hear. First question: Where does this blockage happen? Answer: In a small tube known as the urethra that connects the bladder to the outside of the body. Next question: Why is this blockage a problem in just the male cats? Answer: Male cats urethral tube is much smaller than female cats, making it easier for bladder crystals to plug the tube. What causes crystals? A diet high in the mineral magnesium, urine that is not acidic enough, or something as simple as the cat not drinking enough water can lead to blockage.
The signs and prevention of urinary blockage: The number one sign of urinary blockage is a cat spending way too much time in the litter box doing major straining – straining to the point some cry out. If a cat cannot urinate, toxins passed in the urine build up in the body. If you think your male cat could be blocked, please go to your vet immediately. Any preventative program should be worked out with the vet, but the basics are: (1) keep the cat drinking lots of water, (2) stay on a special diet for bladder problems, and (3) keep your cat’s weight under control.
